The historical attribution to Jacopo Palma il Vecchio was corrected by Giannantonio Moschini who in 1828 proved the authorship of the painting to be by Bonifacio Veronese (de ‘ Pitati).
The painting belongs to the artist’s first mature phase or rather when, between 1528 and 1530, Tiziano’s early work was still the main source of inspiration.
The painting was commissioned by the noble Zorzi family and initially placed on their altar in the left apse chapel, then it later migrated to various locations in the church.
