The first column on the right is adorned with the Gritti family’s coat of arms, and the date commemorates the fire that involved the San Giovanni Elemosinario Church and the intervention of doge Andrea Gritti who favoured its reconstruction.

However, the inscription on the the first column on the left honours the doge Niccolò da Ponte who reopened the building 38 years later. The epigraph features the emblem of the da Ponte family.
