The silhouettes represent the Twelve Prophets, the Twelve Sibyls, the Four Evangelists, and the Four Pundits of the Latin Church.
They were commissioned by the Venetian Senate to be placed one above another in the nave’s niches, instead of the marble statues that Palladio had expected.
Only two Sibyls are shown in the niches of the presbytery under certain circumstances. Today the works are conserved in a deposit annexed to the church.
