The two works by Jacopo Palma il Giovane, Distributing the Holy Riches to the Poor and the Martyrdom of St Laurence, along with the Veronese altarpiece make up a small series.
If the painting Distributing the Holy Riches represents a humble type of Christianity, dear to the Teatine tendency that at that time proprosed, specifically to Venice,
Saint Lawrence as a model for the new Reformed Church from the Council of Trent, then the martyrdom scene can not be compared to Tiziano’s masterpiece in the Gesuati Church.
Particularly, the nocturnal atmosphere and the magnificient illuminated effects from the artificial light and embers were acquired from the maestro.
