The painting was commissioned to the rich merchant artist Bartolomeo Stravazino; his bust is painted along with his father Giovanni’s, on the lower right. The work was originally inserted as the altarpiece of San Giovanni Battista chapel, which Stravazino himself had erected as a family tomb in the Church of Saint Maria of the Angels. The painting was transferred a century later to assure its preservation.
